Community media in London represents a responsive alternative to the traditional media that dominates the capital, according to a new report commissioned by the Centre for Community Journalism.
Community media organisations are engaged in and knowledgeable of their community; this commitment allows them to be responsive to the needs of their community in a way that modern-day detached local news organisations cannot be.
The report was put together by Anna Merryfield of Social Spider CIC, the organisers of June’s first London Community Media Summit.
Centre Manager Emma Meese attended the summit and delivered an overview of the sector and an introduction to the Centre’s work, specifically the launch of ICNN – the UK’s first representative body for community and hyperlocal publishers.
In light of recent calls upon London Mayor Sadiq Khan to step in as seven London titles closed, plunging the capital into a further media crisis, this report provides hope of a real alternative, one that is only getting stronger.
