With just two days to go until C4CJ’s biennial conference: Building the Future of Community Journalism, we’re delighted to announce the programme for the day.
The event, sponsored by Google News Labs, is being held at the Wales Millennium Centre (WMC), Cardiff, and will start at 09:00 on January 11th. The conference will be followed by the launch of the Independent Community News Network (ICNN) at the Welsh Assembly building (Senedd) at 18:30-19:30.
We’ve taken a different approach to our conference this year, and have tried to deliver a mix of talks, panels, and practical workshops, as well as a nod to Talk About Local with an unconference-y session in the afternoon where delegates can choose to discuss one of four topics: advertising, data, collaboration, or business models.
We’re excited to have as our keynote speaker, Grant Feller, who this year wrote a stark portrait of local news in the era of Grenfell for the British Journalism Review. Grant spent his early career working for local newspapers in Kensington and argues that making news before it happens has become somewhat of a lost art form; one that desperately needs to be recovered.
James Hatts from London Se1 was on the ground when terror attacks plagued London over the summer and is on hand to talk us through covering breaking news when it happens in your neighbourhood.
Keith Magnum from the Hackney Citizen, one of only four independent community news publishers to have been awarded a contract with the BBC’s Local Democracy Partnership scheme, discusses holding local power to account.
Fiona Davidson of the Ferret, who is passionate about improving opportunities for underrepresented groups in the media has been working with the NUJ on a project to promote Stronger Voices in Scotland and has agreed to share her findings.
We’re excited to say we have one of Mediashift’s Digital Media’s Top Innovators 2018: wife and husband duo Sumaiya Omar, a social media consultant, and Yusuf Omar, a journalist, launched social video platform Hashtag Our Stories as a way to empower disenfranchised communities to tell their own stories through mobile video.
We also have another of MediaShift’s ‘media innovators to watch in 2018’: Claire Wardle from First Draft News, talking to us about Mis/disinformation and the value of hyperlocal news in building trust from the ground up.
As well as some exciting workshops on Google tools and Snapchat journalism, we also have a panel on the future of print with editors from South Leeds Life, Caerphilly Observer, Waltham Forest Echo, and the Local Voice Network discussing how hyperlocals are bucking the trend; as well as Megan Lucero talking to us about the work of the Bureau Local.
We hope you’re as excited about this fantastic line-up as we are, and we hope to see you bright and early Thursday morning for coffees, teas and pastries on the second floor of the WMC in Cardiff Bay.
